Ockham Lecture: Toby Morris on Illustrating Crisis

From March 2020 through to the end of 2022, Toby Morris and Dr Siouxsie Wiles collaborated on over 70 different graphics explaining the science of Covid-19 and the actions people could take to stay safe. These graphics were shared around the world, repurposed by governments, and led to further work with organisations like the World Health Organisation.

Join us for an inside perspective on this work from Toby Morris. He’ll touch on how and why illustration is effective for making complex information clear and accessible, and discuss the differences and challenges between creating this kind of work for an Aotearoa audience compared to a global one.

In response to the upcoming publication by David Straight and Objectspace, Locations of Interest, Morris will also reflect on the collective 'mental landscape' of this unusual time, and the importance of understanding and responding to the national mood.

Locations of Interest is on its way from the printers and will be available soon, keep an eye out for the launch event.

Toby Morris is an Auckland-based cartoonist, illustrator and writer, best known for non-fiction and documentary comics exploring social issues, as well as using illustration as a tool to communicate complex information in a clear and accessible way. He writes and illustrates the award-winning comic series The Side Eye for The Spinoff, and throughout the Covid-19 pandemic his graphics made in collaboration with Dr Siouxsie Wiles were shared around the world, leading to communication work for global organisations like the World Health Organisation, UNESCO and UNICEF.

The Ockham Lecture series is an annual programme of lectures and panel discussions across different themes that critically engage with craft, design and architecture. This programme is supported by Objectspace's Lead Partner Ockham Residential.
