THE FASCINATION OF JEWELLERY: 7000 Years of Jewellery at the MAKK

Petra Hesse / Lena Hoppe, Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln (eds.)

Published on the occasion of the Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln (Cologne Museum of Applied Arts') 2025 exhibition: The Fascination of Jewellery, this substantial, beautifully illustrated and thoroughly researched book captures the first comprehensive exhibition of the MAAK's outstanding jewellery collection.

With around 1,700 pieces, their collection spans a period of 7,000 years – from ancient gems dating back to the 5th millennium BC right through to contemporary jewellery of the 21st century. Its particular focal points are works from antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the 19th century.

Curatored and edited by Petra Hesse and Lena Hoppe, the exhibition and companion publication investigate the MAAK's collection across frameworks of symbolism, memory, luxury, convention, gender and identity.

The book includes a contribution by Beatriz Chadour-Sampson, over 400 illustrations, and texts in both German and English.

This publication has been imported by Objectspace from arnoldsche art publishers in Stuttgart, Germany. Extremely limited copies available.
