Objectspace is the leading public gallery in Aotearoa dedicated to the fields of craft, design and architecture. We deliver an annual programme of exhibitions and events including lectures, workshops and symposia.
We are looking for a gallery assistant to join our team. Our gallery assistants are the first point of contact for visitors, sharing kōrero and offering Objectspace’s well-known manaaki to all who come through our doors. This opportunity is for two days per week, Sunday & Wednesday, with additional evening and weekend work for events.
Primary Functions:
• To be the first point of contact for all visitors to Objectspace, maintaining a warm, welcoming and highly communicative front-of-house
• To invigilate Objectspace exhibitions, including: daily exhibition set up, providing supporting information to visitors, answering questions and overseeing the safe engagement of objects and artworks
• To maintain daily front-of-house duties including general cleaning, maintaining book store stock, processing sales and responding to phone and email enquiries
• To assist with the set up and delivery of exhibition openings, public programmes and other events
• To provide assistance to other staff and senior technicians during exhibition changeover.
The candidate will:
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of, and commitment to, the principles of te Tiriti o Waitangi, and be committed to working within bicultural and multi-cultural frameworks
• Have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to relate to a wide range of people with warmth
• Have excellent ability to communicate sensitively and in culturally appropriate ways
• Have a strong attention to detail
• Show high levels of tact, maintaining confidences as well as social and ethical standards
• Have an ability to multi-task and perform well under pressure
• Have a strong affinity to the fields of craft, design and architecture
• Demonstrate an ability to work unsupervised and to excel with autonomy in your role
• Have a commitment to continuous improvement of systems processes and practices
• Have a flexible and positive attitude with an ability to work well within a small team, and shared office environment
• Demonstrate advanced computer literacy including all aspects of Microsoft Office.
